On Aloft, and on turning one sentence into a website that tells a story.
Every site begins as weather. A sentence, a screenshot, a link to something you admire; somewhere between them is a decision about what the page should feel like. Aloft makes that decision with you, then builds it.
Filed from the north shore of São Jorge, where the first draft of this page was a single line.
Brief open. Visibility improving.
Reading — what you give it, observed closely, late morning
It reads for intent.
Not keywords. The thing you meant.
Your references, as the camera sees them. Drop an image and Aloft finds what matters in it: subject, spacing, light. These were lifted from the footage above; nothing was traced by hand.
A structure nobody draws, held by every section.
On structure
The opening breaks the air. Each section behind it rides in its slipstream: the same grid, the same type, a pace handed down the line.
Nothing leads for long. A quote takes the front, then an image, then a single line of copy, a rotation so quiet it reads as one continuous thought.
A layout is not a template. It is a picture of what your story agreed to.
Twelve columns · One type family per voice · Pace set by scroll · Cuts, not fades
Taking form — one brief, printed in two inks as you scroll
Your idea, taking form.
A line first. Then motion, colour, surface.
ShapeA single line, drawn from the brief.
PathIt learns how to move through the page.
ColourA second ink, laid over the first.
SurfaceScreen, grain and a little misregistration.
Nothing belowto start from.
Crossing
Most sites begin on a branch: a template, a theme, somewhere safe to perch. Aloft starts over open water. There is no shelf of layouts, only your brief and the long crossing of the blank page, made in one pass, on a type system, a grade and a pace chosen for this one story and no other.

Nobody drafts alone.
“Change one sentence and the whole page answers. Revising is a conversation, not a rebuild.”
— On revising, from the studio notebook
Every box is a section the software is sure of. The rest of the sky is yours to direct.
Now.
At a signal only you can give, every section agrees on the same minute, and the whole page lifts. Publish when it is ready.
We call it a website.
You will call it yours.
You walk away with all of it: the words, the grade, the grid and the code underneath, yours to keep, edit and host wherever the season takes you.
The only human in this issue. Tracked at walking pace, heading off to publish.
The style book — every look Aloft can draft in
Pick a look. Keep the story.
Each style is a whole design language: type, grid, motion and grade. Choose one and it carries through to your brief, at the end of the issue.
Aloft
Somewhere, your page lands.
What are we making?
Words, images, links: one brief. Enter to draft.
Colophon
Set in Inter Tight, Instrument Serif and JetBrains Mono. Footage via Pexels, graded to a single look. Every box you saw was computed frame by frame with OpenCV; the knot was printed live, in two inks, by your scrolling.
This page is Aloft's own front door, drafted in its house style.
